The city of Falcon Heights, Minnesota has honored Philando Castile with an honorary street renaming. It has been five years since Philando Castile was murdered by a St. Anthony police officer, however community support has remained strong. Over 20,400 residents and non-residents signed the Change.org petition to rename Larpenteur Avenue, where Castile was killed, to Philando Castile Memorial Avenue.
Valerie Castile, Philando’s mother, has worked over the past five years to raise awareness about Philando and has been a strong voice among activists to prevent police brutality. “The community has worked so hard over the past five years to get a street sign and I am so happy it is finally happening along with a lot of other blessings this year. I have prayed so hard to preserve my son’s name and good work,” Castile said.
In addition to Philando’s honorary street, a fundraising campaign has been launched to enhance a peace garden that was made in honor of Castile. “The Philando Castile Peace Garden is a place where a life changed, and a community changed,” City Council member Melanie Leehy said previously.
