Mj Rodriguez made Emmy history on Tuesday as the first transgender person to be recognized in a major category. Rodriguez was nominated for ‘Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series’ for her role as Blanca Rodriguez in 'Pose'.
“I do believe this is a pivotal moment. There’s never been a trans woman who has been nominated as a leading outstanding actress and I feel like that pushes the needle forward so much for now the door to be knocked down for so many people — whether they be male or trans female, gender nonconforming, LGBTQIA+, it does not matter,” Rodriguez told Variety.
GLADD, with the support of other national LGBTQ organizations, penned an open letter to Emmy voters back in June urging voters to give 'Pose' the recognition it deserves for its representation of the LGBTQ community. "For far too long, the transgender community has lived on the sidelines. Since the creation of moving pictures, this part of our own community has been represented through harmful depictions that have had a real-world impact on their lives."
The series, now its final season, was nominated for nine Emmy's in total, including 'Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series' for Billy Porter.
