Taraji P. Henson has beautifully portrayed the confident, independent woman in prior movie and TV roles. Her new film, “Proud Mary”, is no exception. Although it seems the film offers some of your typical clichés of the action film genre, there is something to Ms. Henson playing the modern black female anti-hero.  The film feels like a homage to that bygone era of BLAXPLOITATION films of the 1970s (for those of you who were around back then), where you had strong Black female leads like Pam Grier (Foxy Brown), and Tamara Dobson (Cleopatra Jones) kicking ass and taking names.

The film’s trailer definitely appeals to those seeking the kind of action you would typically see in male-driven action flicks. Many online posts have compared it to “Atomic Blonde”, which is completely different story. It will be interesting to see how the film is marketed and received as the theatrical release date nears.

“Proud Mary” is due in theaters on January 12, 2018.
